Now that you step into the 16th week of pregnancy, you will experience certain symptoms and notice some changes. Your baby now weighs about 4 ounces now and body length of 5 inches. By the 16th week, the backbone of your baby is strengthened more. Your fetus by now will have transparent skin, and it’s transparent since there is no baby fat.

Since you have stepped to the 16th week of pregnancy, there are some symptoms involved with it, so let’s discuss it.

How many months are you pregnant at 16 weeks?

You are now four months pregnant and will step into the fifth month of your pregnancy next week. Most doctors track progress by week not months

16th Week Pregnancy Symptoms:

  • Growing Breasts: Since you have stepped into the 16th week of your pregnancy, your breasts will start growing more. But it would be best if you did not worry about it as when after delivery you choose to breastfeed, they will return to their normal size.
  • Constipation: Pregnancy hormones try to make the gastrointestinal tract sluggish. Apart from this, since by this time your uterus is expanding, it can put pressure on your bowels which can lead to constipation. Try to drink a sufficient amount of liquids so as to keep your stomach clear.
  • Vaginal Discharge: There is an increase in your vaginal discharge, and you may feel quite uncomfortable about it. But it is really beneficial as it protects the birth canal from any infection.
  • Varicose Veins: As your body weight is increasing, you might find certain swollen blood vessels in your legs. In order to prevent this, make sure you are gaining weight healthily within a range as excess weight increases pressure on the circulatory system
  • Backaches: Since your uterus is stretching, your belly is getting bigger. Now in order to accommodate the load, your lower back is moving more, leading to strained muscles. In order to soothe your back pain, you can ask your partner to give you a massage, or you can take a warm bath.
  • Bleeding gums: Pregnancy hormones induce gum inflammation which makes it vulnerable to bacteria, irritation, and bleeding. So, to prevent this, keep flossing and brushing your teeth regularly. Also, make sure you visit your dentist soon to avoid any grave infection or disease.

Your Belly at 16 weeks

Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, at 16 weeks, you have a clear baby bump showing that a little angel is residing there. However, even if you are not showing a considerable baby bump, you don’t need to worry about it happens. But if you still have questions, then you can contact your doctor for additional queries. You have also gained considerable weight during this period, but well it is all worth it. Don’t worry if you are gaining weight within the specific range suggested by your medical expert as you would return to your old shape after delivery.

16 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound

You will have the following examination this week

  • Routine Examination: You will have a routine monthly prenatal checkup where the doctor will likely take the blood pressure, check your weight, take a urine sample and talk you through different symptoms.
  • Fundal Height: When you go to your doctor’s checkup this week, your doctor will take a new measurement; this is known as fundus or fundal height. The fundal height is actually the distance between the pubic bone and the top of your uterus. This measurement is actually quite important as it helps your OB or midwife to monitor the growth of the fetus.
  • Genetic Tests: If you have asked for genetic screening, then it is generally done between the period from week 15 to week 22 to check for the baby’s risk regarding any chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects.
  • Ultrasound: Your doctor may schedule an anatomy screen or the level 2 ultrasound screening during the upcoming period, which takes place between week 18 to week 22.

Tips for your 16 Weeks Pregnancy

  • Using Humidifier: Nasal congestion along with nasal bleeds are quite common. So, to prevent it try using a humidifier that will moisten your dry nose.
  • Drink a lot of liquids and soups: Generally, during this period, you might be facing certain issues related to constipation. So, make sure you eat lots of liquids and try and include soups in your diet as they can be really filling.
  • Eat healthily: Eat a lot of vegetables, salads. Even if you want to engage in some calories, go for smoothies and yogurts, etc.
  • Nursing Bra: Since your breasts have grown by now, try and purchase high-quality maternity bra so as to support your tender breasts.
  • Good Chair: Find a good chair or keep a pillow behind your back so that it keeps your back straight.
