Firstly, congratulations on reaching the 12th week of your pregnancy. You are soon about to end the first trimester which also means goodbye to early pregnancy symptoms. Relieved, aren’t you? Also, finally, now, you will be ready to share your pregnancy news with all your family and friends.

Your baby at 12th Week

You have stepped into your 12th week of pregnancy, which means you are in the third month of your pregnancy. Your baby is now about 2 inches, which is roughly the size of a Plum. During this time, your baby is developing its digestive system. Also, her bone marrow is making white blood cells, and the pituitary gland is in the process of producing hormones.

There is good news for you that with this month’s checkup, you will be able to finally hear your baby’s heartbeat! Since you are completing your first trimester, you are probably experiencing certain changes, so let’s check that.

How many months are you pregnant at 12 weeks?

Generally, doctors try to track pregnancy by weeks as pregnancy is about 40 weeks long which doesn’t come down cleanly to 9 months. However exactly now you are about three months pregnant. So, you are just two weeks left to end your first trimester.

Pregnancy Symptoms at 12 weeks:

  • Enhanced Sense of Smell: You will be facing an enhanced sense of smell, which can make you nauseous. Try keeping a lemon wedge nearby so that whenever you feel nauseous, you can sniff, which can reduce this queasiness.
  • Reduced trips to the washroom: In the first few weeks of your pregnancy, you have an excessive urge for urination. This gets reduced by this time as you will have frequent trips to your bathroom. But do keep yourself hydrated throughout the next months so as to avoid any complications.
  • Occasional Headaches: You might experience certain headaches during this period, well it’s quite common, and you can take acetaminophen. However, make sure that you ask your medical practitioner first.
  • Fatigue: In the first trimester, as your baby is rapidly growing and your body is also working overtime. So, you might feel fatigued throughout the day. Take adequate rest during this period to keep yourself fresh.
  • Gas and Bloating: Generally during this time, you have a tendency to eat faster. So, try to slow down when you eat as gulping food quickly leads to swallowing air which creates gas pockets in your belly.
  • Saliva: Well, truly annoying, but during this period, you have a tendency for excessive saliva, don’t worry, it will reduce by the second trimester. You can also chew sugarless gums or use a mouthwash to reduce saliva.

Your Belly at 12 Weeks

By the 12th week, well, you might have a noticeable baby bump. Baby bumps vary from person to person. So, don’t worry if your bump is not showing at 12 weeks as it’s common. Start taking photos as much as you can as it would truly be a memory once you had your delivery. Another common element that you might be facing is dizziness. This happens due to progesterone which increases the blood flow to your baby but slowly returns the blood to you, thereby inducing reduced blood flow and lower blood pressure causing dizziness.

During this period, you can either have an enhanced sex drive or a reduced one. This is due to pregnancy hormones which affect different people differently.

The ultrasound at 12 weeks pregnant

At the 12th week, your baby is developing the important system and parts of their baby. It is also by this week your baby is learning to open and close their fingers and also developing reflexes. You are going to have one more prenatal checkup before the end of your first trimester. You may or may now have your 12-week ultrasound as it will depend on your doctor’s preference. If you have your 12-week ultrasound you will able to see the fetus clearly now

  • Second Prenatal Visit: Your second prenatal visit will be held this week; during this visit, you will be checked for your weight and blood pressure. You will also be asked to give a urine sample so as to check for the sugar and protein level to look for gestational diabetes or urinary tract infection.
  • Fetal Heart Beat: You might also get to hear your baby’s heartbeat for the first time during your second prenatal visit.
  • Genetic Testing: At week 12 you would want to know more about your baby’s health so you would have your genetic testing done so as to determine the risk of birth defects.

12 Weeks Pregnancy Tips

  • Maternity Shopping: Since your waistline will be stretching a bit, you can borrow maternity wear or go maternity shopping.
  • Flu Shot: It is important that you get your flu shot, and this is the best time for it. Do ask your medical experts regarding the exact timing and for side effects.
  • Stay Hydrated: Do drink a lot of water, thereby staying hydrated. If you are sweating a lot, then add an extra glass of water to your schedule.
  • Wear sun protection: Try to wear protect your skin with sunblock or a wide hat to cover your skin as you can face the “mask of pregnancy” which is known as melasma. In melasma dark spot appears and exposure to the sun can make it worse.
  • Use Nursing Bra: Since your body is getting ready for breastfeeding, make sure you wear comfortable clothes and underwire or nursing bra with soft
