How fertilization happens & when does it take place?

If you are trying to get pregnant and are curious to know what your body goes through for getting pregnant or what is the process of fertilization then you have come to the right place

Here we have provided you with all the information regarding fertilization

Fertilization occurs when a woman’s egg combines with a man’s sperm to generate a pregnancy. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube, connecting an ovary to the uterus. An embryo begins to grow if the fertilized egg successfully travels down the fallopian tube and implants in the uterus.

When an egg is fertilized, the uterus produces a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). This is the hormone that is measured by a pregnancy test. It stops the uterine lining from being shed, preventing the lady from having a period. In addition, other physical changes in a woman’s body, such as breast changes and nausea, indicate that pregnancy has begun.

Journey of sperm to fertilization

Fertilization does not occur shortly after sexual intercourse, despite popular belief. Although the quickest sperm can reach the egg in under an hour, the full fertilization process can take many hours. The sperm are preparing for their long trip after ejaculation.

Sperm that make it to the next stage — the cervical canal — spend time going through chemical reactions, gaining the rear speed that’s needed to swim through the uterus and fallopian tubes to find their goal.

The sperm that does make it to the egg still has a lot of work to do. The race is on to be the first to penetrate the egg’s hard outer layer.

There’s also a huge competition. During the furious race to the finish, hundreds of sperm will surround the egg, all attempting to penetrate the egg’s membrane and reach the cytoplasm, where the sperm will then release its genetic contribution.

When one sperm cell successfully enters the egg, the egg experiences a chemical reaction that stops other sperm cells from doing the same. The chromosomes carried by the sperm and the egg then join together, and the egg is fertilized.

Do you feel fertilization?

No woman cannot feel the process of fertilization. But some women can see possible signs of implantation or feel implantation.

Some of the symptoms of implantation are –

  • Cramps – Fertilization or implantation brings a wave of hormones that can lead to cramping. Many women can feel abdominal pain as well.
  • Bloating – Implantation raises progesterone levels, leading to slowing digestive systems.
  • Discharge – After implantation, you may have thick mucus discharge.
  • Bleeding – When implantation, you may bleed or find blood spots in the first trimester.

Myths about fertilization

– Taking birth pills can disrupt your fertility – Yes, this is one of the biggest myths related to fertility. When you stop taking birth pills for some women the fertility may resume immediately or for some women, it may take months, but birth pills do not affect fertility, generally.

– Eggs can be fertilized for two days –  While sperm can wait for their date for up to three days, an egg has a life span of approximately 12 to 24 hours. As a result, sperm must seize the opportunity while it still exists. When it comes to fertility, timing is everything, which is why understanding the indications of ovulation (and pinpointing when you’re ovulating) is so important.

Partners can conceive within three months – Conceiving a baby is dependent on having sexual intercourse and whether the sperm reached the egg or not if the woman has a hospitable environment for the embryo and many more factors. So, for some couples, it may happen in 3 months while others may take more time.

These were some of the facts which women should know about fertilization.
