About Egg Freezing
Egg freezing, also known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, is a remarkable procedure. The Woman’s eggs are retrieved from the uterus. In certain cases, fertility drugs are given before the procedure. The extracted eggs are frozen using liquid nitrogen. This process is referred to as vitrification. The frozen eggs are then stored in a temperature controlled, sterile environment in small vials. They can be thawed when required and used in IVF treatments.
History taking and assessment of the case
The patient will undergo a thorough assessment of her reproductive health. This also means that few tests might also be prescribed such as ovarian reserve testing to check for the quantity and quality of viable eggs. If required hormonal medication can be given to stimulate egg production.
Induction
Sometimes the results of the tests are not adequate and in those situations, the doctor might prescribe certain medicines for this. During the treatment, the patient is monitored via routine ultrasounds and blood tests.
Once the eggs have matured enough, the patient will be given a hormonal injection to induce ovulation. Once the eggs have been released, egg retrieval is performed to harvest the eggs.
Egg Retrieval
It is considered a minor procedure and generally done on a OPD visit. It involves harvesting matured eggs from the ovaries. In this procedure, a trans-vaginal ultrasound is done on the patient to locate the follicles containing eggs. This is performed under anaesthesia.
Vitrification
The whole idea of this procedure is preserving the Egg. It involves draining the water in the cells and replacing it with cryoprotectant or anti-freeze agents. The eggs are then frozen using liquid nitrogen. They are stored in the temperature controlled environment.
