An essential guide for parents with premature babies

Premature birth

Premature birth occurs when the infant is born more than three weeks before the expected due date. A premature birth, in other terms, happens before the 37th week of pregnancy.

When a mother has a health concern, such as diabetes, or performs dangerous things throughout her pregnancy, such as smoke or drinking, premature birth is more likely. If she is under a lot of stress, her baby may also be born prematurely. Premature newborns, particularly those born very early, are prone to a variety of medical issues. Prematurity problems can range from mild to severe. However, the sooner your baby is born, the greater the chance of difficulties. So, if you are a new parent to a premature baby, you might have tons of questions about how to take care of your baby and how to keep them healthy. Premature babies can have critical health at the time and may need excess care and safety from the environment.

If you gave birth to a premature baby and are looking for points to look after or tips, you are at the right place.

Here are essential tips for you to take care of your preemies –

  • Temperature check

You need to regularly make sure that your baby is at a safe temperature. You can do this with digital thermometers or standard thermometers. Adjust your baby’s clothing according to the temperature thermometer records so that your baby can be comfortable.

  • Skin to skin contact

Not only for the infant and mother but also for the father, this has proven to be a beneficial practice. Dress your infant in a nappy and place them on your chest under your shirt or a blanket so that they are snugly bonded to your body. The advantages of skin-to-skin contact are numerous, including reducing any discomfort or stress your kid may be experiencing.

  • Sleep

Managing the correct environment, such as a low temperature and dim lighting in a quiet room, can help your infant sleep better. Preterm newborns are also more likely to be hungry at night than mature babies because the smaller the baby is, the more frequently it has to be fed.

  • Protection from SIDS

This is also known as Sudden Infant death Syndrome, and it occurs when seemingly healthy babies die in their sleep, usually within the first six months of life. Premature babies have a significant danger compared to full-term babies. The reasons for SIDS are not known yet, but to prevent it, you can use some methods such as never making your baby sleep on their belly as it can cause breathing problems, always maintaining the right temperature for your baby, which is average room temperature neither too hot nor too cold. Do not over-layer your infant. Breastfeed them for a longer time.

  • Stay indoor

Because preemies are more susceptible to infection, avoid crowded settings and restrict the number of visitors to your home, particularly anyone who is sick. Before touching the infant, all guests should wash their hands.

  • Emergency ready

Premature babies can have more troubles than regular babies. So it would help if you were emergency ready such as having all the necessary medical items and being connected to the closest hospital.

  • Skin health

If your baby has dry skin, it’s crucial not to use any moisturizer without first consulting your doctor.
