Is it safe to have sex during pregnancy?

sex during pregnancy

Pregnancy is a new experience which women are completely unaware of no matter how much they surf the internet or read. They always want to question their doctors or midwives before doing anything, even if it means asking whether it is safe to have sex during pregnancy. Well, the answer to that question is yes, unless otherwise restricted by the midwife or doctor.

Sex in Pregnancy

  • Having sex will not hurt your baby in any way.
  • But if your doctor or midwife has advised you against it, then you should probably wait till you have delivered your baby. For whatever reason, it might raise unnecessary complications.
  • The reason why sex during pregnancy is safe is that the sexual intercourse won’t go past your vagina, thus the baby will remain safe and completely unaware of it.
  • Having safe sex in no way would induce early labor or even cause a miscarriage.

When can’t you have sex during pregnancy?

  • Your doctor might advise you against it if you have had heavy bleeding during the pregnancy before.
  • If you happen to have sex it might increase the chances of bleeding again as the placenta is placed at a very low position.
  • Sex, after you have encountered heavy bleeding, will only increase the risks of blood clotting.
  • Sex is not advised for those pregnant women whose waters have broken or there are any complications with their cervix.
  • Sex after your water has broken increases the risk of getting an infection. Consult your doctor immediately for assistance to have your baby delivered.
  • You will also be advised against sex if you are pregnant with twins or have had early labor during previous pregnancies.
