What’s the difference between the flu and COVID-19?

Flu Vs Covid

Past two years, we have seen covid 19 disturbing our lives with its different variants such as delta and omicron. Both of these variants have similar as well different symptoms. But 2 – 3 symptoms that are the same in all the variants are cough, fever, cold, and body pain. Now, if you remember the pre covid era – 2019, flu and viral also used to have the same symptom. Usually, we would announce it as flu when we used to have any of the symptoms mentioned above without even consulting the doctor. But in the covid era, when we see any of these symptoms, we panic it to be thought of it as covid 19. This is because not every time a cough can be categorized under covid, it can be flu and vice versa.

Though the third wave is approaching in India and the primary symptoms of omicron are cough, sore throat, and fever, if you have any of those and have the slightest doubt, go get yourself tested because precaution is the best cure.

Though it can be confusing that there are very few differences between flu and covid, it can be differentiated. We have created a whole table for you to look at the differences between Covid 19 and Flu.

SR.NO  Covid 19 Influenza ( Flu)
1. It may take more than one day for the symptoms of covid 19 to appear, indicating that you have the virus. After 4 to 5 days of having covid 19, the person may suffer symptoms. The flu usually takes one day to develop its symptoms. Symptoms of the flu can last anywhere from one to four days.
2.   Covid 19 symptoms can be dangerous and can be passed from one person to another for a long time. A person can be infectious to another person for 2 to 10 days, according to reports. You are only vulnerable for 1 to 2 days when you have the flu. This may vary depending on the age group. For 3 to 4 days, older adults may be dangerous to others.
3.  Many countries have set their own health guidelines for treating covid 19, and vaccination is one of the safest ways to avoid it. Several countries have developed vaccines, but they have not defined which variants are effective. Doctors recommend a variety of medicines to treat the flu, which is mostly self-limiting. In addition, several vaccines defend against various influenza viruses.
4.  This is the most basic difference, SARS-CoV-2 causes covid 19. Influenza or flu is caused by influenza A and B viruses.
5.  Covid 19 can result in severe complications such as blood clots, multi-organ failure, etc. The complications in flu are not as severe as Covid 19. However, its severity can lead you to hospitalization.
6.  This is symptom-related that in covid 19 you usually lose the sense of taste and smell and is one of the major symptoms. In flu, this is not very often you can lose the sense of smell only when you have a runny and stuffy nose.

These were some of the subjects on which covid 19 and flu can be differentiated. Some of these can be helpful to suspect whether you are covid 19 positive or are just suffering from flu. Now when the whole world is experiencing another variant called omicron it is more important to watch out if you have any of these symptoms as said earlier if you have the slightest cough, cold, fever, sore throat, or body aches without even taking any chance or risk you should get yourself tested. It is always better to be sure about covid 19 rather than taking any risk.
