WHAT IS A HICCUP?

Hiccups are spontaneous contractions of the muscle between the abdomen and the chest. It closes the part of our throat where the vocal cord is present, thus causing the “hic” sound. It is the noise of the air released from our lungs.

HOW OFTEN DOES IT OCCURS?

Hiccups are common in adults, teenagers, kids, and babies as well. Kids can have hiccups multiple times a day. It can last for 10 minutes or even longer. They are generally not a cause of concern unless the kids and the babies show any signs of discomfort.

WHAT CAUSES HICCUPS IN BABIES AND KIDS?

Common causes of hiccups can be due to:-

  • The baby taking in excess air
  • The kid being fed more than required.
  • The kid is eating the food too quickly.
  • Change in stomach temperature
  • It can sometimes occur due to burning and discomfort caused by undigested food and acidic juices rising. It is normal in babies and children and is not a cause of concern.

HOW CAN PARENTS GET RID OF HICCUPS AT HOME?

For Babies:– After every feeding, parents are advised to make their babies burp. It can be done by rubbing the baby’s back or holding the baby upright for some time.

For Babies:– Taking in too much air can also cause hiccups. In the case of babies either breast-fed or bottle-fed, the parents should keep an eye that the baby’s mouth is placed correctly, blocking away any extra air to pass in.

For Kids and Babies:- Since it is found that feeding the kid too much can lead to hiccups. They should be provided in smaller amounts per serving and fed multiple times.

For Kids:- If hiccups occur, parents can ask their kids to take deep breaths, hold them for a few seconds, and continue doing it for a few more times.

For Kids:- The kids can also be given a spoonful of sugar and ask them to press it to the top of their mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it. Again, it is something that comes from the experience of old people and does not have a strong scientific background to it, but it is quite a tried method.

For Kids:- If the hiccups cause discomfort in the child, parents can make them breathe slowly in a paper bag a few times. Make sure your child is comfortable while doing so.

It’s a bit of standard advice in every household to drink water when hiccups occur —squeezing the nose while drinking water is considered more effective. Give your child a glass of water, and let the hiccups go!

For Kids:- The parents can slightly pull out the kid’s tongue, which helps the nerves and muscles stimulate the throat.

Sucking on a lemon wedge with a pinch of salt can also help get rid of those unwanted hiccups.

If all the remedies mentioned above are not favorable for your child, you can gently massage on the back of the neck, stimulating the concerned nerve. (Be careful while doing so.)

Eating the kid’s favorite peanut butter and honey can help in getting rid of the hiccup.

Slightly pressing on the muscle between the abdomen and the chest can help release the extra air, which can be the cause of hiccups.

Kids should not be allowed to have too spicy foods. It is considered as one of the reasons for hiccups to occur.

Squeezing the palm with the thumb is an easy way to get rid of that discomforting hiccup.

Pressing on the chest with the knees while sitting in a comfortable position for a few minutes can help the hiccups go away.

Hiccups are not always harmful, except in rare cases when it causes extreme discomfort and other symptoms.

Kids are easy to manipulate or distract. Medication or remedies for less harmful problems should be avoided as much as possible. Hiccups can come and go on their own. Parents can just distract the child and keep them engaged in some activity until the hiccups fade away. Distracting the child from focusing on hiccup is the best alternative. Parents should impart in their kids the habit of practicing some easy breathing exercises and meditation.
