Get your baby to sleep through the night

Sleeping Kid

Babies are the icons of happiness for the entire family. Though they are a bit naughty, they are beautiful in their gestures. You care for your baby’s happiness and even stress when he doesn’t sleep through the night. Don’t Worry! In this blog, we will discuss some tips that can make your baby sleep through the night.

Sleeping through Night

It is used commonly in the context of sleeping without distraction for 6 to 9 hours. It can differentiate depending on the baby’s age or months. Let’s figure it out in simple language:

  1. Newborns tend to sleep for only two to four hours. It happens because they need to feed frequently. Sometimes, a newborn baby sleeps deep and, it happens because he has been fed breastmilk or formula milk in specified intervals.
  2. Two to three months old babies can sleep up to six hours in a stretch. But remember your baby is still nursing, feed him at least twice at night for a sound sleep.
  3. Four months old babies can sleep up to eight hours without disturbance. They don’t require nighttime feedings because they have reached at least 11 pounds making them metabolically filled up. But, we can’t bet on this as babies are demanding.
  4. Five to six months old babies can sleep through the night without any distractions, excuses, or demands for nighttime feedings. At this time, doctors recommend cutting down at least one or two extra nighttime feedings to help them sleep better. Physically this change is acceptable by the baby, but emotionally he still can demand the nighttime feedings as a midnight snack.

Tips

The below-listed points will help you put your baby to sleep early.

  1. Plan and follow a bedtime routine

With planning, execution also matters. Create a bedtime routine for your baby and don’t allow any distractions to spoil the sleepy mood. Prepare yourself for bedtime and keep it simple so that you can follow it every day without excuses. Remember, the slightest error can distract your baby from sleep and can even keep them awake the whole night. Be careful with each element of the bedtime routine. Make the atmosphere calm your baby by either shushing or swaddling him. And don’t worry if you’re traveling because any calm and relaxed environment can have a successful bedtime routine.

  1. Teach the baby to relax and calm himself.

Avoid soothing your baby a lot and give them space to relax on themselves without any assistance. If your baby cries in the middle of the night, go and check them but remember to limit your hours sitting beside them at night. Make them clear that bedtime doesn’t support playing or eating is the time to sleep. If you wish, you can place a hand on his chest to calm him down and then exit the room. It will help to ease out separation anxiety and help your baby to relax by themselves.

  1. Start to Wean off your baby from the night feedings.

Talk to your doctor about weaning off your baby’s nighttime feedings. If you receive consent from your doctor, start following it. It can be hard at first but, after it, everything will be okay. These nighttime feedings often trigger distraction while sleeping, making babies cranky and frustrating in the morning. You can start by weaning off the extra feedings and continue till you have successfully stopped the nighttime feedings.

Don’t become impatient if it’s taking time because babies tend to play around at first to distract you from the routine. Don’t melt away because you want them to be independent of the start. As a mother, it can be hard to see your baby crying due to separation anxiety isn’t happening to you only. Every mom faces it at one point in time. Remain calm and silently carry the routine.
