DOES DOUBLE MASKING PROVIDE BETTER PROTECTION AGAINST COVID-19 THAN WEARING ONE MASK?

wearing double mask can prevent covid

Wearing a mask has been strongly advised as protection against COVID-19. According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), wearing masks can reduce the risk of coronavirus by more than 70%. So the question that pops up is if one mask can reduce the risk to such an extent, then how effective will wearing two masks be? Here’s what experts have to say.

Wearing double mask might be efficient, according to Firas Zabaneh, MT (ASCP), CIC, CIE, director of system infection prevention and control for Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. It comes from the point of view of filtration. Wearing two masks increases the layer of filtration thereby allowing lesser particles to enter. Thus, it increases the filtration capability of the mask.

However, just wearing two masks may not suffice. The quality and fit of the mask play a significant role. Wearing two masks of low quality with poor filtration capability will not prove effective. Additionally, if not worn properly, the two masks may lead to leakage of unfiltered air through the gaps.

It comes down to quality vs. quantity:

If a well-fitting, effective face mask with good filtration capability isn’t available, then two lesser-quality face masks worn together might improve protection. The CDC has recommended wearing a mask having two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric. It must completely cover your nose and mouth and leaves no gaps for the unfiltered air to enter.

When to double mask?

According to Zabaneh, one case in which double masking is a good idea is when there are concerns about source control. Wearing two masks might help reduce the spread of the virus through respiratory droplets from asymptomatic individuals. According to the CDC report, if you wear a cloth mask over a medical mask, this will ensure “substantially improved source control” while also minimizing exposure of the wearer.

How to double mask?

If you double mask, choose a good quality mask with good filtration quality as more layers of filters mean more protection. However, you must be aware that wearing two masks may cause breathing issues. Zabaneh suggests masks that maximize filters and provides a seal around your face without restricting breathing.
