NEW DELHI: The Union health ministry has given hospitals permission to administer the Covid-19 vaccine to those who are eligible as per their convenience.

“The government has ended the time constraint to increase the speed of vaccination. Citizens of the country can now get vaccinated 24×7 at their convenience,” Union health minister Harsh Vardhan wrote in a tweet in Hindi on Twitter.

India began the second phase of Covid vaccination on Monday, making it available to senior citizens and people aged 45 or above with comorbidities.

The second phase of the vaccination drive aims to cover almost 10 crore people. The Centre on Tuesday decided to allow even private hospitals not affiliated to Ayushman Bharat, CGHS and state schemes to be included as centres for administrating the inoculations.

The Centre said 60 distribution points for the vaccines had been arranged nationally from where they are further distributed. The Centre has also advised states to optimally utilise the capacities of private hospitals and ensure adequate allocation of vaccines to all hospitals (government and private) for the entire duration for which sessions have been planned.

Several prominent political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, defence minister Rajnath Singh, health minister Harsh Vardhan, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik have already taken the vaccines. As per the health ministry, a total of 1,56,20,749 people in the country have been vaccinated against Covid-19 till now.
