Do Babies Cry in the Womb?

kids in womb

Most parents take a lot of interest in finding out what their child is doing during his stay in the mother’s womb. Sometimes they move about, suck on their fingers, or practice kicking. Amongst all the activities that the babies start doing while they are still inside their mother, does crying also play a part? Or is their loud cry after coming into this world their very first cry? Let’s find out.

Can your baby cry whilst in your womb?

  • The inside of your womb is filled with a dense fluid called amniotic fluid. Thus, even if your child was to cry, you may not be successful in hearing it no matter how much you try.
  • Since hearing the sound is off-limits, what researchers did do is try to find out through ultrasound images if a baby was really crying inside the womb.
  • They studied the body movements of the baby and paid close attention to the breathing pattern to conclude that the baby was actually crying.
  • A 20-week-old baby is capable of doing all the movements that are required for them to be crying. It was observed that the babies who can cry in the womb are 24 weeks old or more.
  • There is no need to worry if you have found through your doctor that your baby was crying because it only means that they are practicing how to cry out and breathe in air, as they are born.

The very first thing that a baby does right after it makes its way into this world is crying its heart out. This is a very essential part of the childbirth process and determines how well developed the lungs of the babies are. As a survival strategy, it’s only normal that your baby would warm-up for the big event beforehand.
